North of Denver, Colorado, tucked neatly between the mountains and the plains, you will find Fort Collins – the last city on Northbound Interstate 25 just before you cross into the state of Wyoming. Fort Collins is a gateway city to northern Colorado’s Rocky Mountain National Park and Roosevelt National Forest.
The star quarterback, and a popular resident celebrity at Fossil Ridge High School is Max Akin. Max is a superior athlete with football skills to impress the best coaches and NFL scouts. Max Akin is also football player with an unmistakable need to be kind and thoughtful. Meet Max with his funky game day hairstyle!
Max Akin’s fame grew exponentially when he had shown an act of kindness that touched everyone in Fort Collins, and even across the United States. Fossil Ridge High School is home to the SaberCats, a highly successful football program that typically ends their seasons with a winning record. The team’s successful season records can be attributed to Max’s talent and intensity on the gridiron.
The team’s winning seasons are the result of long practice hours and hard work. Nothing can be attributed to mere luck for the Fossil Ridge SaberCats. During the 2016 season, the Fossil Ridge SaberCats displayed how talented and hard working their team is, because they found themselves with an opportunity to beat their local rivals for the first time in five years.
Max’s teammates fully grasp just how cool of a guy Max is. Most high school classmates consider him to be a kind, while still others know he would be a great catch for the right girl. Just about every high schooler knows he is forever willing to help out where he can. Max’s teammates appreciate his all around good natured-ness.
Ironically, through the toughness required to play football, Max Akin’s teammates have grown to understand Max’s softer, more generous side first hand!
As one would expect, Max Akin was nominated to be Homecoming King’. As a result of the nomination, Max realized he had a wonderful opportunity to honor a fellow SabreCat teammate and Fossil Ridge High School classmate, K.L. Norwood.
K.L. Norwood is the SabreCats’ team manager. K.L. Norwood treasures his job as team manager because he is unable to actively participate in the game of football. This is because he was born with Cerebral Palsy. Although Cerebral Palsy has caused K.L. to miss out on the opportunity to play any kind of sport, he celebrates the chance to be the best team manager the Fossil Ridge SaberCats had ever seen. Norwood has clearly realized his own personal objectives.
K.L. Norwood was simultaneously nominated as a ‘Homecoming King’ along with Max Akin, although intuitively he knew, the title of ‘Homecoming King’ would never really happen. At least not for K.L. Norwood.
In typical fashion, the high school ritual that crowns the Homecoming King and Queen takes place during the football game’s intermission, after the high school band performed. When the decision as to who would be Homecoming King was announced, no one was surprised to learn that Max Akin had been chosen Homecoming King. In fact, it was exactly what everyone expected to happen when the king was announced.
With the Homecoming Queen standing along side of Max, Max Akin did something no one would have ever anticipate. Something that would stun everyone who was watching!
Max Akin, star quarterback, super talented kind young man that he was, knelt on his knees and bowed as he ceremoniously passed on the title of ‘Homecoming King’ to K.L. Norwood. The football fans filling the stands collectively burst from joy witnessing this amazing gift Max bestowed on his friend, K.L. Norwood.
From a place of respect and honor, Max actions revealed just how much of gentlemen this young man truly is. He offered his ‘Homecoming King’ title to K.L. Norwood who, had no idea this was about to happen.
Even the Homecoming Queen, holding the dichotomous items of a dozen red roses and the game’s football, looked surprised and enchanted by this act of kindness and respect. It was truly one of those moments you remember for the rest of your life.
In a world of conflict, accusations and disappearing values, it is comforting to see a true friendship between two teenagers on the same football field. Perhaps, adults should take notice of the power of an act of kindness. Max Akin made it quite easy to see the fortitude of this act he bestowed up K.L. Norwood.
Max Akin, in a most stylish way, had found the way to have the entire crowd honor his friend, his classmate and his team manager. Max had truly found a way to honor his teammate and friend in a way that the entire football field and stands would feel through their soul. The friendship between K.L. and Max is clearly visible simply by looking at the photograph below.
This act of class and kindness made it onto the national stage. K.L. Norwood and Max Akin even found themselves invited to the Ellen DeGeneres Show in Hollywood, California.
With all of Max’s fancy moves on the gridiron, his gentle nature actually surpassed these amazing skills by a simple act of kindness in a world that is in great need of kindness.
Max Akin, at his very young age, has exhibited the skills of a truly informed, kind sportsman. His appreciation of his own good fortune is given away freely to those in need of this gift. This idol has no clay feet. He too, is to be respected for his depth of his gratitude and appreciation.
A simple gesture touches many people unexpectedly. Perhaps we should all follow Max Akin’s lead. Go Max!
NYPD Solves a High-Profile Turtlenapping
The New York City Police Department makes headlines every day, but it is not every day that the NYPD makes headlines for solving a turtle kidnapping case. But kudos go to the NYPD for solving the disappearance of a beloved resident of Alley Pond Environmental Center in Queens, 100-year-old African spurred tortoise, Millennium.
A Century of Millennium at Alley Pond
Millennium could have been a youthful, 11-year-old turtle when the 655-acre Alley Pond Park was acquired by the City of New York in 1929. When Millennium found his, her, or its way to the park, the Alley Pond was the source of water that the town of Flushing used for, well, flushing. Millennium survived the construction of the Long Island Expressway across the park, the creation of a golf course, and the founding of the Alley Pond Environmental Center at 228-06 Northern Boulevard in Queens in 1972.
Or maybe Millennium wasn’t around for any of those events. Although Millennium undoubtedly weighs about 100 pounds, and is larger than many of the children who come to visit him every day the park is open, the turtle rescuers who found the intrepid animal believe he could be a mere 17 years old or possibly as much as 100 years old. Either way, visitors to the park regularly ask to see him. And that is how they learned he was missing.
A Shocking Tortoise Disappearance
When visitors asked to see Millennium on the afternoon of Tuesday, July 18, 2017, Millennium was nowhere to be found. The attendants had no difficulty locating Millennium’s companion turtle Mini-Me, but even checks of video surveillance cameras showed no sign of the celebrity turtle. We think of tortoises as moving slowly, but actually they can move quickly, blending in with trees and grasses, so the park staff held out hope that Millennium might just be taking a little vacation looking for a different source of grass and grubs. But when there was no trace of Millennium the next day, they had no choice but to call the police. They were afraid they had a Code 597, abuse of an animal.
Millennium Returns from Connecticut
Fortunately, a Connecticut resident with a conscience made the reunion of Millennium with his young fans possible. And helped the police nab the turtlenappers’ accomplice Shawn Waters in the process.
Thirty-seven year old Shawn Waters loves turtles. He kept small turtles and other animals in the apartment he shared with his mother in Queens. On the afternoon of July 18, Waters was approached by two men who had cut a hole in the back of Millennium’s enclosure and absconded with the famous reptile. They made a deal with Waters to sell him the stolen turtle, and Waters started to take Millennium home in a stolen shopping cart. But no sooner did he have Millennium in his clutches than he realized his mother would never let him keep Millennium at home.
Waters hatched a plan to cover up his crime and get a smaller turtle his mother would approve. A man in Stamford, Connecticut had placed an ad on Craigslist to sell his musck turte. Waters struck a deal to swap reptiles and get $300 cash in the process. (Ordinarily, a turtle of Millennium’s 2 foot by 2-1/2 foot size and gentle watermelon-eating habits would have fetched about $2500, according to park officials.) Waters, who does not own a car, took a commuter train with Millennium to Connecticut, where he sealed the deal.
But by this time the police were checking turtle transactions on Craigslist. They located the buyer, who surrendered the turtle, which was returned safely to Alley Pond Park.
Waters was arrested and later sentenced to six months in jail at Rikers Island. His mother reports that he hopes to get his license to work as a security guard back when he gets out of jail.
