Tanna Marino was a struggling mother, trying to make ends meet while living in Cypress, TX. Alongside her husband, Tanna would work 40-hours per week while trying to take care of her four kids. Life was tough and times were hard. As a local handyman for a company named Mr. Appliance, Tanna was already working her tail off in order to make ends meet. Everything changed one day after getting called into the bosses’ office. What happened? Keep on reading in order to find out!

A Hard Working Mom

Every story starts out with a beginning. For Tanna, her beginning was working full-time at a local appliance repair company. It was pretty notable that she even worked there, due to the fact that appliance repair is typically a male-dominated field. Still, Tanna proved early on that she was great at her job. Her husband was already working full-time as a firefighter which meant that their family home was always busy.

Life Gets Tough

Even though Tanna had a great job and a loving family, life was still hard. There was barely ever any time for her to spend with her children and her husband. In fact, Tanna was even considering starting a second job in order to make ends meet. With her calm demeanor, it would be hard for most casual viewers to see how stressed she actually was.

An Opportunity Arrives

Desperate for some sort of breakthrough, a miracle seemingly landed on Tanna’s doorsteps. She was approached by a production company in order to star in a reality TV show! Tanna had no idea how this situation had happened, but she wasn’t going to let a potentially life-changing opportunity pass her by. Tanna asked for more details before deciding to sleep on the decision.

CBS

Taking The Job

While Tanna was reluctant to pursue fame and hesitant to spend any more of her time away from her family, she knew that she had to take the job. At a minimum, Tanna would gain some TV exposure and that might be able to translate into better economic opportunities down the line. Besides, who could really pass up the chance to go on television?

How It Happened

Tanna first got into the appliance repair industry a couple of years before the reality TV show was offered. Her family had hired Mr. Appliance in order to fix their refrigerator. She heard that the company was hiring and, even though she wasn’t offered a job right away, she went ahead and put her resume in for consideration.

CBS

The New Show Begins

Back in the present, Tanna immediately gets to work on the new reality TV show. She is told that the program will be called “Don’t Quit Your Day Job”. The focus of the show was Tanna and all the work that she had to go through in a male-dominated field.

Meet Your Co-Star

In order to get the show to air, Tanna had to work alongside a woman named Faith Brown. Brown was hired by Mr. Appliance right when the show started.  Tanna noted immediately that Faith looked like she would struggle with the job due to her heavy makeup and long fingernails. Despite her reservations, the two got to work.

CBS

Cut Out For The Job

With Faith following her around during a regular workday, Tanna quickly came to realize that her new co-worker was going to struggle. Faith didn’t have much experience in the appliance repair world but Tanna put in her best effort in order to help her get the job done. During this time, Faith was making notes of her own!

For The Children

While this new reality show was certainly stressing Tanna’s time, she knew it was all for a good cause. After all, if the show was a hit then she’d have enough money to spend more time with her family. For people in Tanna’s situation, any potential breakthrough is going to be a welcome one.

CBS

A Stunning Revelation

As the cameras rolled, Tanna and Faith went about their day on the job. While working on a client’s home, Tanna and Faith began to talk about their personal lives. Tanna revealed that she was considering getting a second job in order to take better care of her family.  Faith was shocked! After all, Tanna was already working so many hours as it was.

Pinterest

Meet The Family

In order to try to break up the monotony of the day, Tanna invites Faith back home to meet her family. The invitation to come to her own home was a wholesome one and soon Faith was meeting Tanna’s husband and four children.

CBS

Faith Remembers Her Childhood

While meeting Tanna’s family, Faith remembers her own childhood. As a kid, Faith’s father worked multiple jobs just to put food on the table. Faith knew as well as anyone that a home without a parent was a tough one to grow up in. It was evident from the get-go that Faith was really feeling Tanna’s own troubles.

Pinterest

A Promise Made

After Faith had met Tanna’s family, she made a promise to herself that she planned on keeping. Faith was going to find a way to help out Tanna so that her situation didn’t get any worse. Faith knew how important it was for families to be together, and she hated the idea of seeing Tanna gone from her children for so long.

CBS

The Final Shot

As their day of filming wrapped up, Faith split ways with Tanna. The producers of the show told Tanna that she would be meeting Faith at Faith’s home the following day. Only, when Tanna arrived, she found a VERY different version of Faith.

Say Hey To The Boss

When Tanna met ‘Faith’ for their second meeting, things were different! Gone was the manicure and the dark hair and in its place was a blond-haired, blue-eyed woman. Faith’s real name was Dina Dwyer-Owens was no regular employee. She was actually the CEO of Mr. Appliance’s parent company, and she was worth millions of dollars!

CBS

Show Within A Show

As it turns out, there really WASN’T a TV show called ‘Don’t Quit Your Day Job’. What Dina and Tanna were really filming was an episode of ‘Undercover Boss’ for CBS. Show-ception!

Pinterest

Dina To The Rescue

Dina sat Tanna down in order to talk about their experiences together. Dina was effusive in her praise of Tanna’s ability to work hard and exceed in such a male-dominated world. Dina was amazed by Tanna’s relentlessly positive attitude and positive work ethic.

CBS

A Generous Offer

Dina immediately offered Tanna a $5,000 grant in order to spearhead a new program focused on employing women in trade programs. Dina wanted to see more hardworking women like Tanna in her industry.

Pinterest

Wait, There’s More

While the new trade program was certainly a kind gesture, what came next was amazing. Dina gave Tanna a $10,000 scholarship fund in order to help Tanna put her children through school. By the time her young children would be ready for school, that fund would be huge!

CBS

A New Life

During their emotional final encounter, Dina said that she wanted to change Tanna’s life so that she could grow with her family. Dina would go on to give Tanna a full $25,000 check in order to provide them with some cushion to make it through life’s hurdles. The story just goes to show that it pays to be kind and hard-working.

NYPD Solves a High-Profile Turtlenapping

The New York City Police Department makes headlines every day, but it is not every day that the NYPD makes headlines for solving a turtle kidnapping case. But kudos go to the NYPD for solving the disappearance of a beloved resident of Alley Pond Environmental Center in Queens, 100-year-old African spurred tortoise, Millennium.

A Century of Millennium at Alley Pond

Millennium could have been a youthful, 11-year-old turtle when the 655-acre Alley Pond Park was acquired by the City of New York in 1929. When Millennium found his, her, or its way to the park, the Alley Pond was the source of water that the town of Flushing used for, well, flushing. Millennium survived the construction of the Long Island Expressway across the park, the creation of a golf course, and the founding of the Alley Pond Environmental Center at 228-06 Northern Boulevard in Queens in 1972.

Or maybe Millennium wasn’t around for any of those events. Although Millennium undoubtedly weighs about 100 pounds, and is larger than many of the children who come to visit him every day the park is open, the turtle rescuers who found the intrepid animal believe he could be a mere 17 years old or possibly as much as 100 years old. Either way, visitors to the park regularly ask to see him. And that is how they learned he was missing.

A Shocking Tortoise Disappearance

When visitors asked to see Millennium on the afternoon of Tuesday, July 18, 2017, Millennium was nowhere to be found. The attendants had no difficulty locating Millennium’s companion turtle Mini-Me, but even checks of video surveillance cameras showed no sign of the celebrity turtle. We think of tortoises as moving slowly, but actually they can move quickly, blending in with trees and grasses, so the park staff held out hope that Millennium might just be taking a little vacation looking for a different source of grass and grubs. But when there was no trace of Millennium the next day, they had no choice but to call the police. They were afraid they had a Code 597, abuse of an animal.

Millennium Returns from Connecticut

Fortunately, a Connecticut resident with a conscience made the reunion of Millennium with his young fans possible. And helped the police nab the turtlenappers’ accomplice Shawn Waters in the process.

Thirty-seven year old Shawn Waters loves turtles. He kept small turtles and other animals in the apartment he shared with his mother in Queens. On the afternoon of July 18, Waters was approached by two men who had cut a hole in the back of Millennium’s enclosure and absconded with the famous reptile. They made a deal with Waters to sell him the stolen turtle, and Waters started to take Millennium home in a stolen shopping cart. But no sooner did he have Millennium in his clutches than he realized his mother would never let him keep Millennium at home.

Waters hatched a plan to cover up his crime and get a smaller turtle his mother would approve. A man in Stamford, Connecticut had placed an ad on Craigslist to sell his musck turte. Waters struck a deal to swap reptiles and get $300 cash in the process. (Ordinarily, a turtle of Millennium’s 2 foot by 2-1/2 foot size and gentle watermelon-eating habits would have fetched about $2500, according to park officials.) Waters, who does not own a car, took a commuter train with Millennium to Connecticut, where he sealed the deal.

But by this time the police were checking turtle transactions on Craigslist. They located the buyer, who surrendered the turtle, which was returned safely to Alley Pond Park.

Waters was arrested and later sentenced to six months in jail at Rikers Island. His mother reports that he hopes to get his license to work as a security guard back when he gets out of jail.
