Oprah Winfrey is one of the biggest names in Hollywood history. Known primarily for her media empire, Oprah has still managed to keep her private life out of the public atmosphere. Despite her constant exposure to the media world, fans rarely get a chance to peek inside of the world that Oprah lives off of the cameras. Having said that, fans got a rare look into Oprah’s private world when her famous $90 Million mansion in Montecito was revealed to the world. If you are ready to see what it’s like to live as one of the biggest names in entertainment history, keep on reading!
Meeting an Icon
Oprah Winfrey is a world-renowned television mogul with a net worth north of $3 billion dollars. Oprah is most well-known for her work on television as a talk show host on her own program from 1986 to 1911. Winfrey has also starred in her fair share of high-profile films, as well. Needless to say, Oprah has done enough to afford to move into her own dream mansion.
Making a Home in Montecito
While Oprah no doubt has a laundry list of homes throughout the world, her $90 million dollar mansion in Montecito might just take the cake. If you’ve never heard of Montecito, just understand that the area is quite ritzy. Homes in Montecito run anywhere from $1 million to $85 million dollars. we’re not sure that we could afford to even walk down the sidewalk.
A Lucky Experience
When Oprah first found herself in Montecito, she wasn’t sure if she was going to settle down in the area. Oprah had come to Montecito in 2001 in order to attend a party at a beautiful mansion. As Oprah walked through the mansion, she had to have dreamed of buying one of her own. Oprah has always been vocal about her dreams of being a real estate investor, so it doesn’t surprise us that she acted on the urge.
Fit for a Television Queen
After deciding to take the plunge and move into the area, Oprah immediately began to shop. She began to circle around a mansion owned by Robert and Marlene Veloz. Robert was a prominent businessman in the aeronautical manufacturing industry. At the time, Robert and Marlene were not living in the house itself, they were living in the gatehouse.
Have to Have It
At the time, the mansion itself was not for sale. Despite this fact, Oprah was not one to be deterred. Remember when we talked about Oprah’s tenacity? Well, she walked up to Robert and Marlene and cut them a check for a jaw-dropping total of $52 million. By writing that check, Oprah would help to initiate one of the largest private property sales in the entire country. We think that it is safe to say that both parties came out on top of this one.
An Older Home
When you are wealthy, old homes are a luxury and not a negative. According to real estate records, the mansion had most recently been completed in 1959. Translating the $52 million that Oprah had paid for the home into modern figures would total roughly $88 million. You’d probably agree that this was one heck of an investment!
Completing the Sale
Needless to say, Bob and Marlene couldn’t possibly turn down Oprah’s proposal. After all, it’s not every day that you get a $52 million dollar offer for your home! With the check cashed, Oprah was the proud new owner of one of Montecito’s most luxurious mansion. If Montecito was exclusive, Oprah’s mansion was more exclusive than anything in the area.
Lots of Space
The palatial mansion has enough space to host even the largest of parties. Inside of the mansion, you’ll find 14 bathrooms, 10 fireplaces, 6 bedrooms, and a whole heck of a lot of space. There are all kinds of specialty rooms sprinkled throughout the home, including wine cellars and private theaters. Can you imagine going to the fridge in the middle of the night?
Welcome to the Promised Land
After moving into her new mansion, Oprah knew that she needed to pick a name for the property. Oprah wanted to name the home ‘Tara II’ after the legendary film, Gone With the Wind. However, Bob Greene, pictured above, thought that the Bible had better inspiration for a name. Bob and Oprah agreed to call the property, the ‘Promised Land’. Though the title was tongue-in-cheek, we’re not sure that they were wrong.
Room to Grow
As you can see from the various shots of the home, the property was massive. The entire complex netted nearly 23,000 total square feet of coverage. From the front steps, you can see both the Pacific Ocean and the Santa Ynez Mountains. From our apartment, we can see the backdoor of the restaurant next door. Life is funny sometimes.
Sigh of Relief
We touched on Oprah’s early struggles above, but we might as well give more detail now. Oprah was born into a single-mother household in Mississippi during the Jim Crow-era. To see how Oprah has succeeded despite her difficult childhood is truly a wonder. There are even pictures of Oprah as a child, wearing a potato sack as a dress.
Making it Her Own
Here you get to see an elaborate overview of Oprah’s Promised Land. Just look at how much space it takes up! You can see that Oprah is obviously taking advantage of the space that has been afforded to her. You’ll soon learn a little bit more about that red box labeled ‘The Expansion’. For now, however, you’ll have to wait.
A Perfect Kitchen
Suddenly you’re standing in a massive kitchen. From the other room, you hear a bell ring. Oprah calls out through the intercom, where is dinner? We wouldn’t know the first thing about serving food to Oprah, but we would definitely give it a go in this amazing kitchen. There’s a fireplace in the kitchen, for crying out loud!
An Emotional Foyer
Here we get to see the entrance to Oprah’s luxurious mansion. You’ll find framed photos throughout the room, all showcasing Oprah’s closest friends and family members. You can tell that the entrance is important to Oprah. Despite the wealth that she has accrued, all that really matters to her is the people that have loved her all along. This is a really humanizing room and we don’t have a joke for it.
Relax in the Reading Room
Let’s sneak into Oprah’s reading room for just a moment, but don’t worry — we’ll be back. Oprah has been open about her love of books, as is evidenced by her world famous book club. Oprah has a fascinating book collection that stretches from one end of this room to the other. In order to really take in the beautiful sight, you need to stand at a distance rather than up close. We’ll come back to this room later.
Lap of Luxury
If you are going to have a mansion, you might as well have a spare room for your guests. Look at how beautiful the arrangements are in Oprah’s spare bedroom. From the fireplace to the textured pink and rose-colored motifs, you just can’t beat this look. We’d happily set aside our own machismo in order to live in a home like that. Wouldn’t you?
Detail in Every Room
if you’re going to spend time with a good book, you might as well do it in style. Here’s a good look at what Oprah’s reading room looks like. Can you imagine the kind of legendary books that she has on her shelf? We’re sure that there are some iconic original novels on those shelves.
Dining With Oprah
Here we get a look at what dining with Oprah would be like. Take in the beautiful wood table and the hanging candelabras. We’re not quite sure what Oprah has for dinner. We just assume that her food is beyond our taste bud’s comprehension level. She has to like pizza though, right?
Patterns, Patterns Everywhere
Oprah has never been afraid to take risks with her fashion or her designs. Here you can see a room filled with different patterns. The green striped couch that you see has already been sold for nearly $3,000 at an auction. Our eyes are drawn, however, to that incredible piece of artwork hanging on the wall. How much do you think that’s worth?
Tea by the Garden
When we sit on our deck and look over the nearby parking lot, we feel relaxed. Sitting in front of Oprah’s garden, well that must be downright euphoric. This space was initially intended for flower preparation by the garden staff. Wait, can you imagine having room for a flower preparation space?
Your Choice of Couch
We imagine that it must be nice hanging out at Oprah’s. Everyone that visits can have their choice of couch. This gargantuan living room is filled with Oprah’s personal touches, including the amazing portrait that hangs on the middle of the wall. We kind of wonder if those couches are comfortable, or if Oprah has ever even sat on them.
Can You Have Enough Shoes
No, you aren’t looking at a warehouse filled with shoes. What you see here is Oprah’s elaborate, expansive, and expensive closet filled with shoes. At some point in time, you have to hit the ‘limit’ on reasonable pairs of shoes. For normal people, Oprah would be well past that limit already.
As you’ll no doubt notice, Oprah has an affinity for beautiful and elegant flowers. We are looking at Oprah’s private tearoom. Hanging from the rafters you can take in the beautiful purple wisterias. Around the entrance, you’ll find your fair share of dahlias, lilies, and roses. Oprah was the driving force behind designing this specific area.
One Shoe at a Time
We’re not going to say that we are even the same species as Oprah. Still, it’s nice to know that she puts her shoes on one foot at a time. Now, we feel like we have to reiterate that we are looking at Oprah’s closet here and not a corner of some massive store.
Honoring Abraham Lincoln
Here we see one of the most interesting rooms in the building. Designed by Andrew Walker and David Simmons, the penny room has rather profound importance to Oprah. Hanging on the wall is a wrought iron penny showcasing Lincoln’s head. The penny was acquired from an antique sale near where Oprah grew up.
Strolling Down Hallelujah Lane
Oprah has never been shy about her Bible references. Here you see one of the most hallowed areas of Oprah’s Promised Land, Hallelujah Lane. Can you imagine taking in the serene beauty of the iron arches, Greco-Roman statues, and luxurious garden? The flowers that you see are Sombreuil roses and they have to be meticulously cared for.
Stunning Artwork in the Garden
No, your eyes are not deceiving you! These elaborate sculptures dot Oprah’s property. You are looking at a series of bronze sculptures designed by Francisco Zuniga, a Costa Rican artist who rose to prominence while living in Mexico. This particular statue is titled, ‘Grupo de cuatro mujeres de pie.’ That’s a mouthful.
Scene From Lion King
At a glance, this gnarled oak tree looks like it was pulled straight from the new Lion King remake. Oprah has a dozen live oak trees on her property. She chose that number in remembrance of one of her famous films, Gone With the Wind. Oprah calls the trees her Twelve Apostles.
Meet the Neighbors
When Oprah first purchased the Promised Land, her neighbors wondered if she would want their property, too. As it turns out, Oprah was interested! When her neighbors moved out, Oprah purchase the property from them. Welcome to Seamair Farm, a beautiful but subdued space where nature is paramount above everything else.
Fancy Some Fishing
If you want to be even more relaxed at this incredible property, you should head out to the fishing pond near Seamair Farm. This beautiful pond was incorporated into Seamair Farm by Cliff May, the architect behind the entire property. This pond is filled with Japanese koi as you can see from the fish below the water.
Moments of Zen
We imagine that it must be easy to relax when you are Oprah. Of course, we can’t imagine the pressure that she must feel when it comes to managing her expansive media empire. We’ll settle for only having to pay attention to our cats. We’ll leave Oprah to manage the billion-dollar enterprises.
Private Horse Track
Before Oprah had purchased the luxurious mansion, the property had been used as a horse track. Near the back of the complex, you can find an elaborate equestrian area. Of course, the area is neatly trimmed and there are stables nearby for Oprah’s horses. You can’t see your neighbors from the field.
Beautiful Vegetable Garden
Even Oprah likes to get her hands dirty every once in a while! Here we can see Oprah showing off her beloved vegetable garden. Oprah is particularly joyous due to the fact that California has been dealing with dire water shortages in recent years. Any time that you get your crops to grow through a drought, you are in good company.
Disaster Strikes Montecito
It was January of 2018 when Montecito was impacted by a series of dangerous mudslides. These mudslides would sweep into town, damaging and devastating buildings all around her. Oprah was stuck in her home during the event and she was helpless to do anything for the people around her. Oprah was lucky that the mudslides missed her home.
Back to the Bathroom
We’re not going to say that we’ve never been excited to see a nice bathroom, but this place takes the cake. This bathroom features a standing shower, a seated stone bath, and amazing views of the natural world outside. We’re half convinced that people get rich just to look at pretty views.
When you live in Montecito, you get to spend time rubbing elbows with some notable individuals. Here we see one of Oprah’s most famous neighbors, Ellen DeGeneres! Oprah had gone on Ellen to take her viewers on a tour through the area near her home that had been impacted by the disastrous mudslides.
Backup Home in Hawaii
When Oprah is tired of living life on the mainland, she heads to Hawaii in order to enjoy her farmhouse located in Mauii. Oprah was inspired to purchase the home by her personal fitness trainer-turned-property manager, Bob Greene. Bob Greene sure knows how to pick them! After purchasing the home, Oprah had Jeff Wooley design the interior of the home.
Orcas Island Abode
As you can see, Oprah is dead serious about her job as a real estate investor. Here you can see the beautiful and refined home that Oprah owns on the beautiful Orcas Island. This beautiful house is worth $8 million and features a guest cottage, gym, tea house, and woodworking studio.
NYPD Solves a High-Profile Turtlenapping
The New York City Police Department makes headlines every day, but it is not every day that the NYPD makes headlines for solving a turtle kidnapping case. But kudos go to the NYPD for solving the disappearance of a beloved resident of Alley Pond Environmental Center in Queens, 100-year-old African spurred tortoise, Millennium.
A Century of Millennium at Alley Pond
Millennium could have been a youthful, 11-year-old turtle when the 655-acre Alley Pond Park was acquired by the City of New York in 1929. When Millennium found his, her, or its way to the park, the Alley Pond was the source of water that the town of Flushing used for, well, flushing. Millennium survived the construction of the Long Island Expressway across the park, the creation of a golf course, and the founding of the Alley Pond Environmental Center at 228-06 Northern Boulevard in Queens in 1972.
Or maybe Millennium wasn’t around for any of those events. Although Millennium undoubtedly weighs about 100 pounds, and is larger than many of the children who come to visit him every day the park is open, the turtle rescuers who found the intrepid animal believe he could be a mere 17 years old or possibly as much as 100 years old. Either way, visitors to the park regularly ask to see him. And that is how they learned he was missing.
A Shocking Tortoise Disappearance
When visitors asked to see Millennium on the afternoon of Tuesday, July 18, 2017, Millennium was nowhere to be found. The attendants had no difficulty locating Millennium’s companion turtle Mini-Me, but even checks of video surveillance cameras showed no sign of the celebrity turtle. We think of tortoises as moving slowly, but actually they can move quickly, blending in with trees and grasses, so the park staff held out hope that Millennium might just be taking a little vacation looking for a different source of grass and grubs. But when there was no trace of Millennium the next day, they had no choice but to call the police. They were afraid they had a Code 597, abuse of an animal.
Millennium Returns from Connecticut
Fortunately, a Connecticut resident with a conscience made the reunion of Millennium with his young fans possible. And helped the police nab the turtlenappers’ accomplice Shawn Waters in the process.
Thirty-seven year old Shawn Waters loves turtles. He kept small turtles and other animals in the apartment he shared with his mother in Queens. On the afternoon of July 18, Waters was approached by two men who had cut a hole in the back of Millennium’s enclosure and absconded with the famous reptile. They made a deal with Waters to sell him the stolen turtle, and Waters started to take Millennium home in a stolen shopping cart. But no sooner did he have Millennium in his clutches than he realized his mother would never let him keep Millennium at home.
Waters hatched a plan to cover up his crime and get a smaller turtle his mother would approve. A man in Stamford, Connecticut had placed an ad on Craigslist to sell his musck turte. Waters struck a deal to swap reptiles and get $300 cash in the process. (Ordinarily, a turtle of Millennium’s 2 foot by 2-1/2 foot size and gentle watermelon-eating habits would have fetched about $2500, according to park officials.) Waters, who does not own a car, took a commuter train with Millennium to Connecticut, where he sealed the deal.
But by this time the police were checking turtle transactions on Craigslist. They located the buyer, who surrendered the turtle, which was returned safely to Alley Pond Park.
Waters was arrested and later sentenced to six months in jail at Rikers Island. His mother reports that he hopes to get his license to work as a security guard back when he gets out of jail.
